April 2004 - Successful Meetings : Staying on Track
Two veteran planners revealCalanit Atia, founder of A to Z Events in Las Vegas, says that the most important factor for a successful meeting in a gaming atmosphere is to create a compelling and pervasive theme for the entire event, threading it through the educational component as well as the organized social functions. "The best way not to lose people to the casinos is to make the meeting interesting and full of energy," she says. "We'll help a client develop a theme that motivates people to stay focused and stay on track." One recent example was called "Reach for the Stars," where the brochure and collateral materials, room decor, staging, speaker selections, and even the receptions, meals, and social events accommodated that theme. "You just have to keep things interesting, including evening entertainment functions, so people don't feel that they have to go out on their own to look for excitement," she says.
